Why More Skincare Isn’t Always Better

By Nicole Phillips, Founder, Dermal Therapist & Nurse

The skincare industry often makes us believe that more products equal better skin.

More serums. More active ingredients. More steps.

As a dermal therapist and nurse, I’ve seen the opposite happen more times than I can count.

Many people come to me using six, eight or even ten skincare products every day, yet their skin feels tight, irritated, reactive or simply overwhelmed.

The problem often isn’t that they’re doing too little.

It’s that they’re doing too much.

When good skincare becomes too much

Many skincare ingredients can deliver excellent results when used correctly.

However, layering multiple active ingredients without understanding how they work together can place unnecessary stress on the skin.

Common examples include:

  • Using multiple exfoliating acids
  • Combining several active serums
  • Overusing retinol
  • Cleansing too frequently
  • Constantly changing products in search of quick results

Over time, this can weaken the skin barrier, making your skin more sensitive and reactive.

More products don’t always mean better results

Healthy skin doesn’t need to be constantly challenged.

In fact, one of the most effective routines is often one of the simplest.

A gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, a nourishing moisturiser and daily sun protection are enough for many people.

Once your skin barrier is healthy and functioning well, you can thoughtfully introduce additional active ingredients if needed.

Listen to your skin

Your skin is very good at telling you when it’s unhappy.

Signs you may be doing too much include:

  • Persistent redness
  • Tightness
  • Burning or stinging
  • Flaking
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Breakouts despite using more skincare

Rather than adding another product, it may be time to simplify your routine.

My philosophy

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is that healthy skin isn’t about having the longest routine.

It’s about using products that have a purpose.

When I created Celulah, I wanted every ingredient to earn its place in a formula.

Not because more ingredients make better skincare, but because thoughtful formulations often produce the best long-term results.

Healthy skin isn’t built overnight.

It’s built through consistency, patience and supporting your skin barrier every single day.
