How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier
As a dermal therapist and nurse, one of the most common concerns I see isn’t acne or ageing—it’s a damaged skin barrier.
Many people don’t realise their skincare routine is actually causing their skin problems.
If your skin feels tight after cleansing, burns when you apply products, looks constantly red, flakes easily or suddenly reacts to products you’ve always used, your skin barrier may need repair.
The good news is that your skin can recover with the right care.
What damages your skin barrier?
The most common causes include:
• Over-cleansing
• Using strong exfoliating acids too often
• Retinol used too frequently
• Fragrance and essential oils
• Harsh cleansers
• Overuse of active ingredients
• Sun exposure
• Cold weather and low humidity
Even skincare that promises amazing results can become too much if your barrier is already compromised.
Signs your barrier is damaged
You may notice:
- Tightness after washing
- Dry or flaky patches
- Redness
- Increased sensitivity
- Burning or stinging
- Skin that feels rough
- Breakouts despite dry skin
- Makeup sitting poorly
How to repair it
The best approach is often to do less.
For two to four weeks:
✓ Use a gentle cleanser.
✓ Stop exfoliating acids.
✓ Pause retinol if your skin is irritated.
✓ Moisturise morning and night with barrier-supporting ingredients.
✓ Wear sunscreen every day.
Ingredients that support skin repair
Look for products containing:
- Ceramides
- Panthenol (Vitamin B5)
- Beta-Glucan
- Squalane
- Hyaluronic Acid
- Peptides
These ingredients help strengthen the skin barrier while supporting hydration and reducing visible irritation.
The Celulah approach
I created Celulah because I wanted skincare that respected sensitive skin instead of constantly challenging it.
Every formula is designed to strengthen, calm and support the skin barrier using carefully selected ingredients—without fragrance, essential oils or unnecessary irritants.
Healthy skin doesn’t happen by using more products.
It happens when you use the right products consistently.
Your skin barrier does far more than most people realise. When you protect it, everything else becomes easier.
